In the job that we all have, sexuality is explored daily and is generally talked about at ease.
But I also get the same line of questions at work….
“I’m a straight female, who enjoys (or only watches) lesbian porn.” “Is this normal” “Why?”.
This question comes up with regular occurrence, and it confuses a lot of people.
That’s partly because there is such emphasizes on being a particular sexual identity that we often forget about the fluidity of gender. Gay, Straight, Bisexual is limiting in terms of their definitions. Reality is that because pornography is considered a fantasy.
A fantasy does not always, or necessarily, add up to the real world.
Indeed, a common misconception is that what you watch on your tv is what you enjoy in real life. This is not necessarily the case. Though the admittance rate is a rarer, there are straight guys out there that enjoy gay porn. They don’t like men, are not sexually attracted to them. But they simply enjoy watching them have sex. I know, it’s a little odd isn’t it? Sexuality does not have a lot to do with what one finds stimulating and what one fantasizes about.
Indeed, sex therapist Megan Fleming argues that pornography is
“a safe way to realize what turns you on, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you want to do it in real life”.
It’s the fantasy aspect which is what makes porn so appealing
As well as the specifics and stylistic aspects of the genre when it comes to female consumption of lesbian pornography. Indeed when it comes to lesbian porn, the statistics show that straight women are over 130% more likely to search for lesbian porn than their straight male counterparts. Studies show that over 50% of lesbian porn that is downloaded and purchased is being consumed by straight women – which I think is great!
So what is it that attracts straight women to lesbian porn?
Lesbian porn fundamentally has a different style to other types of porn. There’s no penis, and what’s normally regarded as a finishing move, i.e. the ejaculation of a male and orgasm of female, doesn’t exist in this film.
Lesbian porn is extremely sensual
Now whilst you can also get many sub genres within lesbian porn, most lesbian porn is of a sensual and romantic manner.

Lesbian porn is generally of a more caring and gentle manner and is ‘easier on the eyes’ for the straight female viewer. In heterosexual porn, the focus of the actual act, primarily centers around the penis, and stimulation of the penis. Fleming points out that this is not the case in Lesbian porn. In actual fact that in lesbian porn, there is a primary focus on ‘oral sex and clitoral stimulation as the main event’.
Hence, many women view this to be far more sensual and thrilling than girl and guy pornography.
Lesbian porn seems more ‘real’
Whilst every video is essentially a performance (A distinction which needs to be pointed out at every opportunity to halt the proliferation of unrealistic expectations in regards to porn), lesbian porn undeniably comes across as more ‘real’.
They don’t orgasm as soon as something is inserted into their vagina (e.g. a penis). Girls almost always seem to be enjoying each other’s company and enjoying themselves in general. There’s generally a more genuine chemistry between actresses.
I’ve found a lot of lesbian pornography is quite honest. If a girl is uncomfortable, she will say it within the scene and they will shift to doing something else. In a lot of heterosexual porn/PIV (Penis In Vagina) style porn, you can often see that the female is uncomfortable. Or not 100% enjoying what they’re doing but it almost always goes unsaid.
Shows What It Is Like
For many people, lesbian porn gives an opportunity to see what it might be like to be with another woman.
For a lot of women, lesbian porn offers a chance to see in the comfort and safety of your home to what it might be like to dabble into the other side of things. I think (in my humble opinion) females tend (treading carefully here) to know when something isn’t working for the other partner. When they’re uncomfortable and when to stop. Females tend to be better at taking these subtle non-verbal communication cues. So whilst it might be seamless to the viewer, often they are swapping up the act they’re doing without having to verbally communicate that they’re uncomfortable.
Lesbian porn often uses sex toys
Sex toys are universally stimulating but a lot of straight women have the desire to watch other women using sex toys. So why not chuck in another women using a sex toy on another women?!
As alluded to earlier, it’s not necessarily the fact that it is two women engaging in sexual relations here that is the primary reason as to why straight women watch lesbian porn. Intrigue lies in the content, and the delivery of that content. In heterosexual porn, it sometimes lacks the chemistry. It becomes an emotionless scene regarding penetrative sex that ultimately ends when the male has ejaculated. Meaning that there is no more form of sexual play to be had, and they move on. Center of pleasure here, is the male.
It is exceptionally rare that the male performer, after climaxing, will spend time focusing on his female co-star in order for her to climax. The very few times that it does is where the male has ejaculated from oral stimulation, will focus on his female co-star for a while. Until he is ‘ready’ to engage in penetrative sex. Majority of male/female sex is both formulaic and standard.

I’d like to clarify that just because someone is sexually interested in men, doesn’t mean that they want to watch them perform in sex.
There could be a variety of reasons for this which include an embarrassment, shyness, or visual aversion towards a penis. Some women, do not at all like penis as they deem it to be an unattractive, dirty part of the male body. Whilst this in some ways is an odd approach, it could relate to their upbringing whereby they firmly believe that genitals are a thing that should not be spoken about, touched. And are purely for reproductive purposes as opposed to sexual pleasure.
They’re not a particular fan of heterosexual noises (which kind of relates to the realness of pornography), or they just prefer the focus to be on the woman and for there to be no men involved. They may not like the treatment of women, when a male is in the scene. Or they feel that viewing lesbian porn isn’t necessarily cheating on their husbands.
As said, there’s a myriad of reasons and is actually quite common. And in a way relates to why a lot of men will watch lesbian porn. Realistically, it’s not because they particularly have a fetish for lesbians. Just they feel that they question their sexuality if they find that they enjoy watching men having sex with women.
Focus is on both females finishing
Unlike normal straight or gay porn in lesbian movies they actually care that each are having an orgasm (usually).
From the majority of PIV porn that I have watched, the main focus is on pleasing the guy or the main goal is for the guy to finish. This is quite disheartening to women in general to feel as though they shouldn’t finish. Or aren’t necessarily giving the chance to finish.
As I mentioned earlier, have you ever seen a film where the man will focus on pleasuring his female partner after he ejaculates? This is an aspect which doesn’t mirror real life, in reality there would be a lot of men that, having climaxed, would be more than happy and willing to provide sexual stimulation for their sexual partner.
They understand that it can take women a little longer to climax, and they also are of the belief that they shouldn’t be selfish in the bedroom. In lesbian porn, generally (again, not always) the focus is on both of the females achieving orgasms or at least in any situation, there is a female having an orgasm.
Generally there isn’t anything degrading or violent
Unless you’ve specifically sought that genre out. This is a big one that a lot of straight women express is their main reason. A lot of (again, not all) PIV porn is or can be seen as being degrading/violent which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. In most porn, the female is dominated, it is her that goes along with the flow with the male co-star directing and leading the scene.
Generally it is quite obvious and can be as simple as the male star verbally directing his female co-star. Or maybe with a gentle hand, hair pulling, pushing down on the shoulders, physically moving her etc. There is nearly always, quite obviously, a natural display of leading the scene from the male. With the exception of bondage and genres of films which specifically state male submission.
Of course, within the lesbian genre, there are sub genres where you can get bondage. But it doesn’t seem to be the most ‘popular’.

There are many reasons as to why lesbian porn is far more stimulating to the perspective of a straight female. Whilst I have gone through a bunch of carrying reasons. There may be numerous other reasons that I haven’t mentioned as why straight women have reasons to watch porn of the lesbian variety.
At the very least I hope that some of the above points will resonate with some people. It is my aim of this article to banish the common misconception that sexuality has anything to do with what you find visually stimulating.
